Road trip guide UK – Netherlands

Who would have thought you could drive from the UK to the Netherlands in under 6 hours. We made the drive as part of our 3 cities in 3 days tour and couldn’t believe how easy it was!

Ferry from Dover

We started our journey with the P&O cruises ferry from Dover to Calais. The ferry was easy to drive right onto and took only 1.5 hours to reach Calais in France. On board the ferry there are a variety of food and drink options as well as the option to take part in some duty free shopping. Slash the prices of tax when you buy alcohol and cigarettes here.

Calais to Bruges

Driving straight down France’s A16 until you reach the Belgium border and then crossing onto the E40. The journey from Calais to Bruges is 118km long and will take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Once you reach the centre of Bruges the city is easily accessible due to it’s small size and everything is in close proximity.   Bruges to Brussels

Continuing along Belgium’s E40 east you will easily reach Brussels from Bruges in only 1 hour and 15 minutes across 100km. Brussels is a much larger city and choosing where to go in the city will determine your time on the road. Traffic can be much heavier so choose the right time to travel.   Brussels to Antwerp

Located in very close proximity to Brussels Antwerp is only 55km and a 45 minute drive. The drive is on the way to the Netherlands and barely asks you to leave the E40. Well worth a stop off at Belgiums other major city.

Brussels to Amsterdam

After only a short drive on the E40 you will cross the Netherlands border and take the E311 for 165km 1 hour and 47 minutes until you reach the centre of Amsterdam. This is the most scenic part of the drive and gives you the option to view windmills and flower fields as you make your way towards the city centre.  Driving stop off’s for Amsterdam include:

Keukenhoff

Visit at the right time to view the amazing flower fields of Keukenhoff flower show.  Windmills

Molen Van Stolen and Zaanse Shans are windmills located on the outskirts of the city and well worth a visit.
