London’s top 20 tourist attractions

London is our home town and also conveniently our favourite city in the world. With so much history and a very diverse city there is certainly something for everyone.

Tourists will be busy with a high amount of tourist attractions to keep everyone busy depending on your interests. From indulging in the royal family with visits to Buckingham Palace and visits to The Tower of London to taking in those beautiful views of the London skyline in roof top bars or from the carriages on the London Eye.

The Tower of London

Step back in time at The Tower of London and learn about London’s monarchy’s history as you wander the steps of those in years past. Wander the cobbled pathways and corridors and take in sights such as the prisons, turture rooms, banqueting rooms and the specialty the crown jewels. The Crown Jewels sparkle and you watch in awe as you can see the real objects from the photographs of Kings and Queens covered in jewels for their royal coronations and weddings.

Outside the Tower of London is just as special as you marvel at Tower Bridge connecting both East and South London with a still working draw bridge. Be there in time to watch the bridge draw to let one of the ships pass to continue its sail down the River Thames.

Buckingham Palace

View from the gate or be lucky enough to visit during open house times and purchase a ticket. View the home of the Queen of England and look for the flag to see if she is home. Buckingham Palace is home to the Monarchy of England since 1987, currently serving Queen Elizabeth. The palace is largely used for events held by the Queen such as knighthood ceremony’s and visits to leaders from abroad.

Watch the changing of the guard to gain the ultimate experience.The change of the guard starts at 10:45am sharp in the morning and lasts for 15 minutes. Th guards officially change over at 11:00am. It’s an English tradition that has not changed throughout the years and wholeheartedly worth being there to see.

River Thames Cruise

Cruise down the river Thames and take in the views of all of the London river side. Tower bridge, The London eye and Big Ben are the top sights to be seen as you cruise underneath all of the cities bridges. Viewing during the day and separately at night to gain the best views as your day time sights include marvelling at the architecture and nighttime sailings to see the city lit up. Plenty of cruises are on offer including meal time cruises, music cruises and party cruises depending on your style.

The London Eye

Take to the sky to see London from a glass dome. The London eye is an observation dome originally build for the Millennium in 2000. Construction started in 1988 and the wheel stood tall for the Millennium. The London eye is Europes tallest observation wheel and it rotates at a rate to get you around the wheel in 30 minutes. Take in various perspectives of London from above with this panoramic view.

London Dungeons

Be prepared to be scared as you head into the gory past of London. Follow in the footsteps of those such as Jack the Ripper as you watch the show unfold. Special effects and actors really help to set the scene as you step back in time. Beware as you turn the corners and look out for any creepers. The London Dungeons are also home to a few rides, a boat ride for those not looking for that adrenaline spike and also the drop for those looking to get their pulses racing.

View from the Shard

Take in the panoramic view from London in London’s tallest building. The view is magnificent alongside a host of world class restaurants and bars. The indoor viewing deck is on level 69 whilst the outdoor deck is on level 72.

The Shard is 310 meters high in total and it’s name is a reflection of the designing referring to a shard of glass.

Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament  

Probably one of London’s most iconic sights – Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are a striking sight. The Great Bell of the Clock also known as Big Ben is a bell tower which chimes for Londoners to hear every hour. The tower is 96 meters tall and is Europe’s biggest 4 face clock. Connected to Big Ben are the Houses of Parliament home to the house of commons where British parliament do their work. The buildings are impressive and yo can marvel at the architecture. Visitors can often also step inside to watch as debates unfold.

The o2 Arena – Walk over the o2

The o2 arena is an indoor arena that was previously known as the Millennium dome. Once the dome was purchased by o2 it has been renovated to be one of the biggest arena’s in the UK offering music, theatre and sporting events.

Up at the o2 is an awesome experience that lets you explore the iconic o2 arena from a different perspective. Harness in and climb to the top for great views from the edge of London.

Theatre 

The West End shows in London is some of the top theatre productions in the world that rival the likes of Broadway. Be sure to hit a show, the small iconic and historical theatres are packed full of architecture and history. Our favourite show is undoubtedly Wicked. Daily discount tickets can be purchased from Leicester Square and you can often get a good price for the afternoon matinee.

The Emirates Airline 

Take a ride on the Emirates Airline cable cars that connect you from the Docklands to the o2 arena Greenwich. One of London’s newer tourist attractions the cable cars have only been in operation since 2012 they are still attracting visits from locals as well as tourists. The cable cars take approximately 10 minutes from when you step on board to get you to the other side. The view from the cars allows for awesome views from the edge of the city both day and night.

Head to Maddame Tussauds to explore and marvel at the one of kind wax figures of all those important to the British culture and way of life. Marvel at the figures of the royal family and important figures to the UK such as David and Victoria Beckham.

St Paul’s Cathedral 

St Paul’s Cathedral is an awe inspiring cathedral with a dome in London. Step inside to marvel at the architecture and then venture down into the tombs to see where famed Londoners were laid to rest such as the Duke of Wellington.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is a Roman Catholic Abbey in the centre of the city of Westminster. Home to specialist celebrations such as royal weddings and coronations. Ben Jonson the poet is also the only person to ever be buried there. Take a step inside to walk to the steps of previous Kings and Queens of London.

The Orbit Tower

The Orbit Tower is a 114.5 meter structure in London’s olympic park. The Orbit Tower is home to the ArcelorMittal Orbit. The ArcelorMittal Orbit is an action packed slide that allows visitors to plummet down the world’s longest tunnel slide at 178 meters long and 76 meters high this is one not to be missed as you hit speeds of 15 miles per hour. The top of the structure is home to an observation deck for views over the Olympic Park and am excellent view of the London skyline from just outside of the main city.

Natural History Museum

Enter one of London’s most famous museums and marvel at the collections and exhibits of the Natural History Museum. Entrance to the museum is completely free, however you may need to purchase tickets to see some of the exhibits inside. The museum is home to an array of historic objects, figures and research that will spark wonder.

Tate Modern

This network of four art museums is a art lovers paradise in London. International, modern and contempt art is at it’s finest here and it’s the perfect place to come to marvel at the pieces and exhibitions.

Kew Gardens

Kew Garden’s is a world class botanical garden in London. Explore the various plants and fungi as you look at one of largest collections of preserved specimens as they hold over 8.5 million. The greenhouse like structure is beautiful and the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea.

London Zoo

The worlds oldest scientific zoo which was originally intended to be purely for science is now one of the largest zoo’s in the country. It turned into a zoo when the animals that graced the Tower of London were transferred to the zoo in 1847. Situated on the edge of Regent’s Park London the zoo is in the centre of the city. It is home to an array of animals and experiences can be purchased for experiences such as zoo keeper for a day, animal encounters and feeding experiences.

The National Gallery

Located in the bustling centre of London Trafalgar Square is The National Gallery. A free of charge attraction in London allowing you to marvel at the collections and exhibitions from famous artists. With collections from artists such as Van Gogh and Leonardo de Vinci The National Gallery is home to historic pieces from some of the worlds leading artists.

Churchill’s War Rooms

Step back in time back to the second war room and visit one of the branches of the imperial war museum. Visit Winston Churchill’s own war bunker and see what he got u to when inside. Step into Churchill’s shoes as you trace his steps and learn about how important decisions where made behind the scenes.

Hyde park

The largest of four royal parks in London is Hyde Park. Wander the park and explore its attractions such as boating, swimming and horse riding through the pathways in the park. Watch Londoners go about their day and picnic and jog in the park. The park is home to Lake Serpentine which is full of ducks and large swans, as well as two lakeside restaurants to marvel at the view from.
